Identity
Headlands Center for the Arts 2023 Benefit Art Auction Identity
A unique identity for the Art Center’s Annual Art Benefit that considered and expanded the institution’s current brand identity. By utilizing the smallest icon from the brand’s unique glyph library, multiplying and animating it allowed for the development of a customized type interpretation made from Headlands’ primary typeface. Additionally, these “dancing” glyphs worked as engaging animations for use in both social media and at the live event. The print invitations for the event also incorporated the idea of multiplicity with die-cut glyph multiples used to convey event-related information in one envelope.
Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective
Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective is the first comprehensive consideration of the artist since her death. Featuring never-before-published diaries, sketchbooks, slides, and ephemera, this lavishly illustrated volume provides an unprecedentedly full picture of Ramberg’s lifelong fascination with patterns and formal variation and her impact on the art of the twentieth century.
Citing Black Geographies Exhibition Identity
Citing Black Geographies presented the work of fifteen artists whose practices examine “black space”—a term describing the topographies, zones, scenes, and structures that portend black cultural experience.
The primary wordmark was drawn from the typeface VTC Du Bois, by Tré Seals, is used throughout as a reference to and an extension of the work of W.E.B. Du Bois’ and his students’ hand-drawn and uppercase sans serif used in nearly 60 poster-sized infographics for the 1900 World's Fair in Paris.
Staples Jr. Singers: When Do We Get Paid? (In Full) Album
When Do We Get Paid? was produced on the occasion of the exhibition Citing Black Geographies by GRAY and Luaka Bop. The album is based on the Staples Jr. Singers record of the same name, originally released in 1975. This limited edition version was both displayed and played as part of the soundtrack to the Citing Black Geographies exhibition at GRAY Chicago curated by Romi Crawford.
The album artwork uses typography from the original 1975 album and features a gold ink sleeve and gold vinyl record. The imagery is pulled from footage of the singers hometown of Aberdeen, Mississippi. The album also included a fold out metallic ink poster promoting the exhibition.
FALSE FLAGS
FALSE FLAGS is a research platform that asks questions about contemporary social and political life—especially how, informed by the perversions of neoliberal capitalism and disseminated by both new and remediated technologies, we determine and organize ourselves into new classes of viewers (yet old subjects of history).
Video description: a short looping video taken by Wil Driscol of several Hour Studio designed books stacked on top of each other, on top of a white pedestal, in front of a large fan.
(A)Part A Recipe Guidebook to Chicago Publication
(A)Part Chicago is a recipe-guidebook to Chicago that is meant to help encourage people both in and out of the city to explore the city through the lens and experiences of Chicagoans. The book is made up of 26 contributors from a variety of sectors—tech, art, progressive education, small business, nonprofit, retail, finance, hospitality, activism, academia—who have all impacted and invested in the arts & culture ecosystem in Chicago.
Statsinger Cohen Foundation Identity and Website
Founded in 2020, The Stanley and Evelyn Statsinger Cohen Foundation is devoted to preserving and promoting the artwork of prominent Chicago artist Evelyn Statsinger (1927–2016). Envisioned by Statsinger and her husband Stanley Cohen (1927–2017) during their lifetimes, the Foundation supports the artist’s legacy through a variety of initiatives, including funding exhibitions and catalogs of Statsinger’s work and making the Foundation’s collection more accessible through exhibition loans, digitization, and conservation.
Monochrome Multitudes Exhibition Identity and Didactics
Identity and exhibition graphics for Monochrome Multitudes, an exhibition that traces “the monochrome” as a fundamental if surprisingly expansive artistic practice.
The exhibition identity was primarily built around the use of Palermo, 2018, a typeface by Joe Scanlan that was included in the exhibition.
Theaster Gates: Every Square Needs a Circle Exhibition Catalogue
Theaster Gates: Every Square Needs a Circle was designed to accompany the exhibition of the same name and offers a detailed look at the artist’s recent work in multimedia sculpture and installation. The book’s design responds to and extends several characteristics of works in the exhibition and opens with a poem printed in bronze ink written by Theaster Gates. Alongside an essay by artist and writer Zachary Cahill the publication also features 48 color illustrations, 4-page gatefold, a foil stamped slipcase and silkscreened cover.
MoCP
The Museum of Contemporary Photography was in need of an updated website that would better serve both the visitors of the museum and the artists they were representing. The previous site was less accessible and images were often presented at small scale and non-responsively. With the redesign of the site, the museum’s identity was maintained but embraced a more contemporary style of typesetting and incorporated unique uses of the logo, such as using the ‘O’ of the logo as portal for video. The new site also included large-scale, immersive images to create a deeper engagement with the featured photographers’ work.
Stockyard Institute: 25 Years of Art and Radical Pedagogy Publication
The first comprehensive survey of the pioneering socially engaged practice of artist Jim Duignan and his ongoing Stockyard Institute project. Produced to accompany the retrospective exhibition at DePaul Art Museum, this catalog provides important documentation and historical context for one of the most significant social practice projects in the world of contemporary art. The book’s design encourages wandering between essay, interviews, and archival objects. It includes the artist’s extensive archive of references from the Situationists International to vintage how-to manuals.
